Although inbred mouse strains have been the premier model organism used in biomedical research, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have seldom been successful at identifying genes involved in clinically relevant traits. On pages 62–69 of this issue, Gary Peltz and colleagues describe a new computational approach which, when used in the context of other `omics' data, can substantially improve the prognosis of mice genetic association studies for biomedical discovery.
